Wednesday Night's Class

We had another full house Wednesday Night. With Cobrinha out of town Jacare has been running the classes and has been drilling us on the fundamentals.
Tonights technique focused on escaping the back into half guard then reversing the situation and coming on top.

Jacare starts the technique with Kevin on his back. It is important to note that Jacare is protecting his neck by controlling Kevin's choking arm and looking in towards the elbow.

To begin his escape Jacare posts on his his right foot and moves towards his left. He keeps the foot posted so Kevin can't throw him to the other side

Once on the side, Jacare steps over Kevin's left leg and works to put his shoulders on the floor. Jacare is careful to trap Kevin's leg underneath his body so Kevin can't throw him to the other side... Notice a theme?

Once Kevin realizes he is about to loose the back he tries to come on top and Mount. When Jacare feels Kevin move, he forces Kevin's leg in between his and swims his Right arm inside to trap Kevin in the half guard.

With the position secured, Jacare sets up his sweep. Jacare controls Kevin's belt with his right hand and Kevin's knee with his left. Jacare moves his hips forward getting Kevin to shift his weight back

When Jacare feels Kevin leaning back he rolls back to the otherside and comes on top.

Once on top Jacare traps Kevin's leg in between his to avoid being triangled

Friday Lunch Class

Today Class started with Master Jacare's yoga warm-ups. Everyone felt great afterwords. This was followed by Cobrinha teaching the defense for a heel-hook.

- Ed goes for the heel-hook on Cobrinha. He hooks Cobrinha's right leg with his left. Ed also pushes Cobrinha's left leg with his right, this raises Cobrinha's right heel off the ground.

- After Cobrinha's right heel is up Ed hooks it with his left arm, getting the heel in the crook of the elbow.

- Ed gets the heel in the elbow of his left arm and drives his right arm across Cobrinha's lower leg. Ed then starts to rotate the leg to the right to put pressure on Cobrinha's knee. Cobrinha spins with the move and starts to push off with his free leg.

- Cobrinha continues to spin and press being aware of possible knee bars and Achilles locks.

- Almost there.

- Freedom.

Our Guest

For the past few days we have had the honor of one of Master Jacare's original blackbelts Octavio Couto coming in to train with us. Professor Couto recieved his black belt from Master Jacare in 1996 in Rio De Janeiro at the Second Alliance Team Tournament. Professor Couto invited everyone passing through Los Angeles to train with him. He can be reached at ocoutojr@gmail.com or on Facebook.

New Guest Instructor

One of the things that I love about our school is the wealth of talent that is constantly dropping in to train with us. I honestly believe that the reason why we are head and shoulders above the other schools in Atlanta is because we are constantly bringing in high level instructors that allows us to understand Jiu-Jitsu from their perspective. We all get better when we are constantly being exposed to the latest techniques and new variations on traditional moves.
We are fortunate to have visiting us from California one of Jacare's black belts Otavio Couto. Otavio was part of the second wave of students that Jacare promoted to Black Belt, he has an incredible understanding of Jiu-Jitsu and was kind enough to share some interesting variations he has created from the double under pass.

When controlling the Dubble Unders, Otavio like to control the collar palm up. He explained to the class that this helps keep the elbow tucked in to your opponents hip making it harder for him to push up on your arm and escape

Another key point was the fact that he never releases his grip on the lapel as he passes. Traditionally we have always released this grip and pulled up on the back of your opponents pants to assist the pass, but if you keep control of the lapel it traps his hip and allows for greater control of the situation

Wednesday Lunch Class

Today we started with takedown drills:

After our warm up we split into Gi and NoGi sections. The Gi section focused on a half-guard sweep.

- The bottom man grabs Jacare's knee with his right hand and pushes with his left.

- A better view of the grips.

- The legs are moved in a sweeping pendulum motion bringing Jacare over.

Apoio Terere-HELP TERERE

Fans or friends of Fernando Augosto known to all as TERERE. Terere was one of BJJs most influential competitors as well as the most entertaining.

Terere grew up in the slums of Cantagalo in Rio De Janeiro and studied Jiu-jitsu under famed professors Alexandre Paiva of the Alliance Team. Terere received his black belt in 2000 and his amazing legacy began with some of the worlds most amazing matches in BJJ history! One would only have to watch Mundials 2004 to understand that statement.

Unfortunately in 2004 Terere was incarcerated while coming home from a trip to the United States. Having no money the members of the BJJ community, comprised of his true friends and fans, grouped together to pay to get Terere a lawyer and have him released from prison.

After aproximately 3 months in prison, he was released and returned to Brazil.

Since than Terere has had so many ups and downs outside of the tatame and has made a couple attempts to return to competition, but everyone can see that he is still a shadow of his former self.

Recently Tereres family announced that they were in desperate need to help him by sending him to a private health clinic to help battle his depression and illness he now faces. Team mate and world famous Grappler MARCELO GARCIA has created a fund where people can send moneys to, which Marcelo will in turn send to Tereres family in order to help them put him in a proper clinic. Also, FIGHT PLANET will be selling t-shirts with TEREREs picture that says "VOLTA TERERE" which means "Come Back Terere". All of the profits from the t-shirts will be sent to the same fund made by Marcelo Garcia as well.

If you are a fan of TERERE, a fan of Jiu-jitsu, please help this cause. Even if you cannot afford to help out with a donation of purchase of a t-shirt, please let others know about whats happening. I will be posting all updates here for everyone to see.
Thank You
