Tuesday Night Class

We had another packed class tonight, I'm glad everyone is really fired up about training! For today's technique Cobrinha showed a counter to the Sit-Up-Guard

Jeff has the Sit-Up Guard on Cobrinha. This is a very offensive guard, Jeff has Cobrinha's arm and leg trapped and can set up a number of sweeps from this position. To set up his counter Cobrinha controls Jeff's leg and the back of the neck.

Cobrinha pulls Jeff towads him and pushes down on the leg to release his knee

With his leg free Cobrinha can step over Jeff's leg and he uses his grip on the collar to turn Jeff and put his back on the floor. In this position Cobrinha has Jeff's right leg pinned and his left arm trapped between his thigh and calf

From this point Cobrinha can set up his attack, he feeds his right hand (palm up) deep into Jeff's collar then breaks Jeff's grip on his sleeve. With his right hand trapped Jeff can't hold on to Cobrinha's sleeve

Once his Arm is free Cobrinha grabs Jeff's other collar (palm up).

To apply pressure to the choke Cobrinha turns his wrists, pulls his elbows to his hips and drives his weight forward

Monday Evening Class

I guess everyone had a great weekend because today's class was packed! So much so that the class got split up between our 2 Instructors.

The Advanced guys worked with Cobrinha, the technique was to sit out and take the back after your opponent spraws.

Homberto shoots on Adam, Adam spraws to defend.

Before Adam can cross face, Homberto traps Adam's right arm and switches his hip. As Homberto kicks his right leg through he uses the back of his head to assist the movement.

Once Homberto kicks through he turns the corner and controls Adam's back

Jacare was in charge of the beginners section, he showed a variation of the cross choke from Closed Guard

Jacare has Bart in the Closed guard with his arm trapped. Jacare has wizard Bart's arm and is holding the opposite collar

Jacare grabs the other collar with his right hand, thumb inside. He pulls Bart towards him with his legs, brings his elbows to his hips and applies pressure for the choke

Satuday Technique

Today Jacare taught us a clock choke from a turtled opponent.

- Darren is turtled and Jacare goes to his back. Jacare's right leg is next to Darren's body. His left leg is up providing slight forward pressure.

- Jacare opens Darren's left lapel. Jacare then slides his right hand deep into Darren's left lapel across Darren's neck.

- After the far lapel grip is secure Jacare grabs Darren's left wrist. It is also acceptable to grab the other lapel.

- Jacare starts to move his hips and upper-body forward.

- To finish the choke Jacare switches his hips.

A video of Jacare demonstrating.

Saturday Class Warmups

Today Jacare led us through a series of drills for warm-ups. Most focused on ground work, emphasizing passing the guard.

Beginner Class Recap

For today's Beginner Class Jacare focused on techniques from the Knee on Belly

Jacare starts in the Knee on Belly position. Jacare uses his right hand to open Todd's collar and slides his left hand deep into the collar. *Note: Jacare slides his first hand in palm up

Jacare slides his right hand into the collar palm down. When Jacare grabs the collar he only has his thumb inside

To apply pressure to the choke, Jacare turns his wrists out, brings his elbows to his hips, picks Todd's shoulder off the mat and drives his weight forward towards Todd's head.

Thursday Lunch Class Gi Technique

Today Jacare showed a sweep variation of the sit up guard.

-Jacare is in the open guard.

-Jacare works to break his opponent's grips, swings his leg down getting ready to swing it all the way around Eric's leg.

- Jacare has sat up and has his right leg posted in Eric's left, Jacare's left leg is wrapped all the way around Eric's right. Jacare is also controlling the bottom of Eric's sleeves.

- The same as above, from another angle.

Wednesday Night Class

Today's class opened up with some take down drills, followed by techniques, some passing-defending the guard circuit training and rolling.

Today's technique was a sweep from Sit-Up Guard with a follow up pass to side control.
Alec is in Diego's Guard, Diego pushes on Alec's Knee and transitions into the Sit-Up Guard

When Diego sits up, he traps Alec's right arm and left leg

Diego shifts his hips back and drives his right shoulder into the back of Alec's trapped leg. Diego stands up and uses his right foot to scoop up Alec's leg

When Alec does down Diego follows up by driving forward and keeps pressure on Alec by getting the underhook and putting his head on Alec's chest

Diego walks his hips up towards Alec's head while keeping Alec's left leg trapped between his legs.
As soon as it's in range Diego cross faces Alec with his left arm.

Once Diego has control of Alec's head he switches his hips and passes to side control

Beginner Class Recap

For today's class Jacare focused on maintaining the Mounted Position. The Mount is a very advantageous position but a lot of guys are hesitant to use it for fear of being bumped off

As Daren begins to push up on Jacare's chest, Jacare counters by swimming his arms and posting

When Daren hip escapes and pushes on Jacare's legs, Jacare counters by lifting up Daren's elbow and sliding his knee up into Daren's armpit

When Daren turns, Jacare gets behind his shoulder and forces Daren to turn over so Jacare can take his back

New Purple Belt

Wednesday Night Class

For today's technique Cobrinha showed us some of his favorite counters to the Sit-Up Sweep

To start the technique, Ian is in the guard and he sits up and traps Cobrinha's lapel, Cobrinha controls Ian by holding Ian's collar and pants just below the knee.

As a fake to set up the technique Cobrinha pushes Ian backwards

As Ian resists Cobrinha pulls him back in and traps Ian's head under his armpit. *Cobrinha still has his grips on Ian's collar and pants*

Cobrinha dives over Ian and puts his back on the floor

Cobrinha pulls down with both his arm contorting Ian's body and apples pressure on the choke

If your opponent has a strong neck (Like Ian) and doesn't tap, you can release the leg, roll on top, trap the far arm and apply more pressure to the neck

Beginner Class Recap

Its been a great week so far with Jacare back in the gym and for his first beginners class he showed the zipper choke

Jacare starts on Todd's back with the seat belt grip. Note: Jacare has his right hand in a fist and his left hand is on top protecting it. He does this because he will use his right as the choking arm.

With his left hand Jacare opens Todd's collar and slides his right hand in deep.

He then grabs Todd's opposite collar with his left hand. To finish the choke Jacare pulls down with his left hand and across Todd's throat with his right
