News from Yellowknife
Hi Jacare,
I am proud to announce that we now have a permanent location here in Yellowknife. We also joined forces with a local Kickboxing club to share in the cost of running a full time facility. Thanks for everything Master. I will see you in October for another life changing experience. I have a little message one of my students wrote on our Blog we are writing for our school. I wanted to share this with you and the Alliance Family.
The Family Grows
I can remember carrying mats out of the back of a truck in -40, only to carry them up another 2 flights of stairs. Piling them in a small little room, putting them out wall-to-wall and getting my first tastes of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Some of those first classes there would only be 3 or 4 students, but we learned a hell of a lot. Then after a couple hours of good training we'd pull all those mats up again, cart them down the same 2 flights of stairs, bundle up and load them back into the truck. Some of us would then help unload them off the truck and up 1 flight of stairs and down 2 more to their resting place until next class. It's like it was yesterday.
We eventually grew, and as with any family, when you grow, you need a bigger space. So we made the move to our current location. No longer did we need to take the mats in and out of the truck. We just had to take them up and down each class. Much less time consuming but still not ideal. In our second home our family has grown larger, stronger and closer but still without a sense of home.
Tonight was the turning of a new, exciting page for Alliance Arctic Jiu-Jitsu. After our class, the last in our current location, we all for one last time, pulled up the mats. Only this time we loaded them into the trucks. It was time to move our family again, only this time it felt different, it felt like we were moving home. The class had a buzz about it. We were a jovial family, filled with excitement for what we knew was coming. Even though we were seeing one of our brothers off, the spirits were high. How had our family grown? We had gone from a group of people where a few would stick around to help with the mat loading and unloading, to a family who all eagerly got in there vehicles to move the mats to their new home. When we got there everyone was talking about the new facility, imagining what will be, feeling the excitement as we put the mats back down. After about 45 minutes we all left and prepared for the future.
With our first class in the new Martial Centre facility on Thursday, our family will have a house warming party. The same parties we've been having 3 times a week since January only this time the party will be in our place, our home.
Congratulations Faron, you've raised and led your family to their first permanent home and we thank you!

Las Vegas Open Results
Graciemag article - Las Vegas Open Standouts
Our good friend and Alliance Instructor in Texas was recognized by Graciemag as one of the standout competitors at the Las Vegas Open last weekend
In ultra-heavyweigth adult category, Stephen “Pesadelo” Hall from Alliance took gold in his division against Fabiano Lima Monteiro of Brazilian Top Team. At 39 years of age, he says he has to travel to find guys in his age group to fight, so he usually fights in the adult division. Hall, who is currently looking for a sponsor, says, “Next year I will be the oldest guy to medal at the Mundials in the adult division at 40!”
“I was disappointed in my showing at the Masters/Seniors in Rio this year,” Hall says, “I came in 3rd, but won it last year.” One good thing came out of it for him, “I’m happy to be the first black belt to medal in both the International Masters/Seniors and the Rio Open in the same year as a black belt.”

Graciemag Article: Gigi gives black belt to ADCC beast and issues alert

Days after snapping up another gold medal for his collection in the senior 2 division of the International Master competition, Alexandre “Gigi” Paiva plowed head on into new conquests.
In Europe, where he is on a seminar tour with his prodigy Fernando TererĂª, Gigi sent good news from Poland, a land renowned for his tough inhabitants.
“I just gave a black belt to the best grappler in Poland, my student Radek Turek. He’s actually the best grappler in Europe,” he tells GRACIEMAG.com with exclusivity.
For those for whom the Polish name doesn’t ring a bell, Paiva reminds us: “He’s been winning the European ADCC trials for the last few years, winning both at weight and absolute. And he’s won all the no-gi championships in Europe in recent years. He fought in the latest ADCC’s and isn’t even a black belt yet.

Turek isn’t Gigi’s first black belt in the country, having already promoted his student Sebastian Slowek. The teacher made the most of the dialogue to issue an alert.
“Those two have been my students for more than nine years, they deserved the promotion. I see there’s a group that comes here to Europe to do seminars and ends up giving belts to all the participants. I don’t promote anyone in seminars where I don’t know the students. Keep alert, advertising seminars by giving new belts is like spitting in the plate we eat from.

Graciemag Article - Fabio and Roger training together
Exclusive: Roger and Gurgel train together
by Ivan Trindade — August 3, 2010.
Fabio Gurgel is on vacation.
Or at least we thought.
The Alliance general today announced over Twitter that he’s in London, but his down-time hasn’t yet begun.
“I just got back from Roger’s academy here in London. Together we promoted the student Ricardo Lewandowski to black belt. Of course, we trained…” wrote Gurgel.
Later, via email, Gurgel explained this standout Jiu-Jitsu moment in the story of Alliance and Gracie Barra: “Ricardo was a student of mine for years. He’s been living in London for three years and trains with Roger. At the European Jiu-Jitsu Championship in January Roger and I planned to promote him together the first chance we got. Ricardo is the son of the president of Brazil’s supreme court, who is also named Ricardo. As far as I know, he’s the first student to receive his black belt from two teachers from different schools.” And that wasn’t all, as Gurgel explains: “I had the pleasure of teaching some positions to the students and then Roger and I rolled.”
Gurgel took the opportunity to send in three photos of the historic training sessions. Three records that prove once again that rivalry in Jiu-Jitsu belongs to the past.
