Congrats Alliance Albany

Alliance Saratoga made our competition debut yesterday at NAGA Albany. We left with 5 golds (w/2 expert devision belts), 3 silvers and 2 bronzes! Three of those golds were in the white belt division by students with less than 6 months of training. A clear testament to the power of the Alliance Fundamentals system!

He went nine months without doing Jiu-Jitsu, not even putting on a gi, because of an injured knee. After undergoing surgery in May 2011, the sweat Tarsis dripped was in the physiotherapy room.

Last weekend, still rusty, Tarsis resolved to stick his neck out at the Gramado, Brazil leg of tryouts for the Abu Dhabi WPJJC, to recuperate his confidence. Everything worked out just fine. In the under 92kg division he just missed winning gold, but still the Alliance ace was positive about his performance.

“I felt a lack of wind; but thank God I didn’t feel any injuries. Now it’s back to physical conditioning to get my strength back and not tire out so much, to make it back to the top,” remarked the black belt from São Paulo while in the VIP lounge at Porto Alegre airport.

“For the first time in a long while I totally felt the adrenaline starting with the first match on. Heavy legs… But the main thing was to recover my confidence in the movements,” explained Tarsis.

SOUZA DEFEATED TARSIS 4-0 IN THE FINAL

“I was really tired in the final against Alexandre Souza; my legs were spent. When he broke my grips to pass, I hung on however best I could. He stuck in the hooks and won by 4-0. In the semifinal with Alexandro Ceconi I was already starting to feel fatigue. When he applied pressure from the top, I put him in 50/50 guard and thought, ‘It’s in God’s hands now.’ I remembered how in Abu Dhabi he even passed Rômulo Barral’s guard—something almost no one manages to do. But my guard worked; I hung on and he didn’t pass, so I kept the score at 2-0,” he said, summarizing his assessment of what happened.

The champion, Alexandre de Souza, another missing from the competition scene as of late, commented on his win: “I felt some nagging injuries, but I’m doing a good job of picking the competitions I enter; that’s why people haven’t seen me competing lately. In the final I figured Tarsis was going to pull, so I won that one on pressure, breaking his grips and taking his back. I tried to get his neck but he defended well. Now it’s on to fighting for gold in Abu Dhabi in April,” said the trouts winner in celebration.

2nd Degree for Rafa!

Congrats to our good friend and Alliance Greenville Instructor Rafael Rosendo Dos Santos who was awarded his second degree. Rafa has been a black belt for 6 years now and is doing a great job in Greenville!

Friday GI Classes

To make up for lost time we will be having GI classes on Fridays until the Pans. We expect to see all our competitors in class and ready to go!

We are open! First class will be 7:30pm tonight and regular schedule here on out! Come train!!!

Final Inspection Update

We had our final inspection today but we were unable to get the ok to open our door. After Saturday's inspection, we were under the impression that the fire exit lights were the last thing to do but apparently the inspector "forgot to mention" that we are also required to have a light switch at the door. So we have called our electrician, he will be back out here in the morning to wire in the switch and then we can get the city to check it once again.

We are sorry for the delay but at this point we are being nitpicked by the city. We are extremely frustrated at this point but are confident that this will be the last obstacle for us to overcome. I will be let everyone know how the inspection goes, it is my understanding that once the city signs off on the final inspection we can open our doors right then and there.

 

Construction update - Ready for Mats

Final clean up is on the way and the school will be ready for the mats on Sunday. We apologize for the delay and ask anyone available to help us sunday to put the mats down so the city can inspect and allow us to open our doors and resume training.

Anyone in the area please come to the gym at 4630 N. Shallowford rd. Dunwoody 30338 at noon to get us ready.

Closed for Construction

We'd like to publicly thank everyone who came out on Saturday and helped us move into our new facility. Due to the bureaucracy of the city of Dunwoody and Dekalb county, we are still in the process of renovating our new location and will not be having classes on Monday as we hoped.

Rapid Fire Purples

In our latest installment of our in house tournament, our purple belts showed that the biggest difference between blue and purple belts is their ability to finish. Some expected to see some long matches and even stepped out for lunch as the tournament began, only to return with the event already over.

After some exciting finishes it came down to Joey Collins and Jim Brochu. Two men with very different games. Jim got into the final by his ability to set up chokes from odd angles while Joey relied on his leg locks to put him in the finals. After some back and forth between the two, Jim was the one who went for Joey's foot. Unfortunately for him, this played into the big man's game and didn't let the opportunity to exchange go to waste. After some resistance it was Jim who found himself tapping.

Congratulations to Joey Collins who booked himself a spot at Pan in March. Your registration is on us!
 

Fight For Your Belt Tournament - Blue Belts

In the second installment of our Fight For Your Belt Tournament our blue belts put on a great show! 21 competitors from our association came to fight for a purple belt.


Match of the day - Record Breaking 

We thought the white belts had some long matches, but Philipie Bitencourt and Dexter Rivers took it to a new level. Their first round match lasted 1 hour 46 mins and 25 seconds. An extraordinary battle that came to the brink so many time, but the guys always found some way to hold on. Well almost always.

Philipe went on to win that epic battle, and fought another 2 matches before falling to the eventual champion. Philipe ended up competing for a grand total of 1 hour, 55 mins and 47 seconds. Clearly he was exhausted!

After watching the marathon of a match Jacare decided that 37yr old  Dexter River had earned his purple belt. Even though he lost the match, a new belt is a nice consolation

Chris Nicolias fought his way to the top of the blue belt mountain on Saturday. Chris requested to delay his official promotion until he competes in the Pan in March. Hopefully Chris will have another dominating performance in Cali

Alliance In-House Tournament - White Belts

We had a great turn out for the first week of our In-House tournament on Saturday.
Representatives from Greenville,  Gentry MMA, Megaladon, Tekniques and Alliance Huntsville joined our guys on the mat for a great day of friendly competition.

Match of the Day

Special shout out to Derik Wilson and James Godwin who ended up fighting for 54mins and 23 seconds in their first round match. You guys are both worriers, that was incredible!


New Blue Belt

Big congrats to Brian Hutchings who came out on top on Saturday. Brian fought 4 tough matches to be the last man standing and our newest blue belt. Good job to our black belt Casey Banes who is obviously doing a great job in Athens at Megaladon BJJ to have his student win this event.
